New work thrives in Tanzania

Just a year and a half after the Tanzania Command was formed, its new training college was opened and dedicated. Commissioner Patricia Bird, international secretary for Africa, participated in the weekend events. She was welcomed by Lt. Colonels David and Jean Burrows, command leaders.

Hundreds of Salvationists and friends gathered to publicly welcome the 12 cadets of the Crossbearers Session.

In his presentation of the cadets to Western Territory officer Major Linda Manhardt, the newly appointed training principal, the officer commanding read from Matthew’s Gospel and then called each of the 12 to the mercy seat, reminding the congregation that these young people were the disciples of the 21st century.

After lunch, the crowd regrouped and marched to the site of the new training college, where Bird conducted a small service before the college was declared open. Afterwards, cadets conducted tours of the facility, which consists of three new classrooms, an assembly hall, library, principal’s office and training officer’s office.

“At the close of the day, there was a deep sense of gratitude to God for his provision and resourcing, with a continuing sense of the command and its officers, soldiers and friends wanting to pursue their mission with vision and purpose, knowing that God will undertake to enable and equip them for his task,” stated Lt. Colonel David Burrows.
