Sather at Sun City West
Colonel Esther Sather, who in retirement has volunteered for the past two years as a chaplain at the Dell E. Webb Hospital in Sun City West, Ariz., now helps coordinate the hospital’s 21 volunteer chaplains. “It’s lovely to be a chaplain in this place…Many of the patients are older and have a need for spiritual support,” she said in an interview with the Daily News-Sun.

Corps cadet scholarships
Captain Kyle Smith, territorial youth secretary, has announced the Western Territory will provide partial scholarships for 20-25 corps cadets to attend the New Zealand and Australian Tri-Territorial South Pacific Youth Congress Kaivata in Fiji, January 18-22, 2007. For more information, contact your divisional youth secretary. Applications must be received by September 1, 2006.

More going on at Moore Street
Portland’s Moore Street Corps was selected for a special appearance by the AND 1 Mixtape tour basketball players; the 2006 tour has scheduled appearances in 25 cities throughout the U.S. Moore Street received a special performance prior to their game at the Rose Garden Coliseum. In addition, humanitarian, author, and talk show host Montel Williams’s mobile bus “Partnership for Prescription Assistance” visited Moore Street. Through this mobile unit, Williams helps educate the public about drug assistance programs.

Floral designer visits Mission Corps
More than 40 children from San Francisco’s Mission Corps Day Camp program received a visit from San Francisco’s most celebrated floral designer Jun Piñon of Piñon Design. Piñon, who creates floral designs for such events as the opening of San Francisco’s ballet season, talked to the children about flowers, and helped them decorate flowerpots with pieces of colored paper. His visit was a prelude to his second appearance at The Salvation Army’s annual Tools for School fundraiser on August 3 that benefits San Francisco’s Back 2 School program; this year’s inspiring event will be held once again in the Omni Hotel’s elegant ballroom.

Modesto luau a hit
Seventy-five of the Modesto Red Shield’s Home League women (and some spouses) attended a beautiful Hawaiian luau with games and prizes. Major Dave Bowler grilled hamburgers and Major Jeannie Bowler and Home League ladies made the surroundings look like Hawaii. Women attended from as far away as Merced, Turlock, and Ceres as well as Modesto Citadel and Modesto Red Shield. Major Judy Smith, DHQ, was the speaker.

Reno ARP recognized
The Salvation Army’s Reno, Nev., Adult Rehabilitation Program (ARP) was honored recently by the Association of Paroling Authorities International (APAI). The APAI presented a recognition plaque to Director of Rehabilitation Services Steve Charter at their conference in honor of the Army’s “dedication and resourceful volunteer services, which has resulted in many offenders’ successful re-entry into society.”
