Myanmar—The Singapore, Malaysia and Myanmar Territory recently expressed thanks for the worldwide support for victims of the Nargis Cyclone in Myanmar (May 2, 2008). Burmese officers, Salvationists, and volunteers quickly reacted to the tragedy and helped people in every way possible.

The Salvation Army’s total Nargis Cyclone disaster relief income is over $1.7 million.

Over $1 million has already been spent on food and other relief items including medical supplies, tarpaulins, a four-wheel drive vehicle to negotiate the muddy roads, transport costs, and wages to employ local relief workers. Building repairs were needed to the regional headquarters, Yangon Central Corps and Dallah Corps. Thousands of homes had to be rebuilt in about 30 villages; work is ongoing.

Uruguay—The Salvation Army’s Salto Corps was destroyed by fire in late November. Thankfully, no loss of life occurred and the children’s home, located next door, was spared. This is the home corps of Major Elicio Marquez, territorial multi-cultural ministries secretary, who entered training from there. He requests prayer “for the corps family as they struggle to accept this loss and as they struggle to rebuild.”

China—Led by the Chief of the Staff, Commissioner Robin Dunster, The Salvation Army’ s China Task Force recently met over two days in Hong Kong to examine and evaluate the Army’s relief work and development services in mainland China. Task force members represented the Hong Kong and Macau Command, which oversees the work in China, and the South Pacific and East Asia Zonal Office from International Headquarters.

Participants discussed the opportunities for ministry and strategies for moving forward. For many years The Salvation Army has fulfilled a significant ministry through emergency and poverty alleviation projects. This work continues as the Hong Kong and Macau Command is committed to serving suffering humanity in Christ’s name in mainland China.

Canada—On Saturday, Dec. 6, close to 10,000 participants across Canada helped to raise hundreds of thousands of dollars at the annual Salvation Army Santa Shuffle. Held on the same day in 35 cities from St. John’s to Victoria, “shufflers” have fun while raising money at the family-oriented run and walk.

“It is inspiring to see the spirit of Christmas and the generosity of Canadian,” said Graham Moore, territorial secretary for public relations and development. “Proceeds from this event will help women and children in crisis, feed and provide shelter for the homeless and help make Christmas a possibility for those in need.”

The Salvation Army Santa Shuffle, a partnership with the Running Room, began 18 years ago in Alberta and since becoming a national event in 2001, over a million dollars has been raised for the Army’s programs and services.
