AUGUST 16—Salvation Army relief teams are assisting victims of a deadly 8.0 earthquake centered 90 miles southeast of Lima, Peru. Over 450 have died and more than 1,500 have been injured throughout the region.

In an interview with New Frontier, Major Maria Flores, South America West territorial public relations director, reports that a team of Salvationists had been dispatched from Chile to Peru, but was unable to reach Pica due to the heavy damage sustained by the Pan American Highway.

Instead, the team went to Pisco, a port city 160 miles southeast of Lima; approximately 70 percent of the buildings in that city collapsed. “Our team is handing out blankets, water, and surgical masks,” stated Flores, “and is attempting to help those with immediate physical needs; there is also a significant need for spiritual counseling among those who are homeless.”

The divisional headquarters in Lima, Peru, is also providing aid to victims.
