Have you seen a passion play? Or maybe … what is that?

These theatrical productions invite the audience to experience first-hand the last week of Jesus’ life on earth. From before the Reformation in the 1500s, passion plays occurred regularly across Europe and made their way to North America, the Asia Pacific and around the globe.

Why have passion plays been so popular and lasting? By drawing an audience into the last week of Jesus’ life—from his triumphal entry on Palm Sunday to the last supper on Thursday to the glorious morning of Resurrection Sunday—these plays brought the stories from Scripture to life.

It is in that bringing to life, that connection of Scripture to emotion, that makes passion plays and other creative expressions of Easter so meaningful.

Creativity—whether it be a play, an art masterpiece or a beautiful song—connects our heart’s deepest emotions with our mind’s knowledge.

As parents, we pray that our children will come to know not only the truth of God’s Word, but the beauty of a living relationship with Jesus. Creative responses to Scripture, like those prompted by the new Holy Week Art Journal from Caring Magazine, endeavor to help kids make those important connections. Creative activities, like art, help new neural pathways form in our brains, making those important connections.

Our new Holy Week Art Journal will bring your family along an immersive Scripture journey from Palm Sunday to Easter, asking participants to respond creatively each day to what they learn about Jesus. They’ll draw the faces into the crowd watching Jesus enter Jerusalem, and write a newspaper article exclaiming Jesus turned the tables in the temple. They’ll imagine the table setting at the Last Supper, and reflect on what the landscape around Jesus’ tomb looked like.

Each day, kids will imagine themselves in the very places Jesus walked, hearing his last words to his disciples, friends and persecutors.

Journeying with Jesus is a lifelong endeavor, one that requires our minds and our hearts.

Join us and help your kids integrate their knowledge with their emotions this Easter with the Holy Week Art Journal from Caring Magazine.
