Whitman recognizes Annika Herbes

Annika Herbes


Annika Herbes, soldier of the Spokane, Wash. Corps, recently received the President’s Cup at Whitworth College for her outstanding academic achievements and commitment to service. She graduated with a 4.0 GPA and BA degrees in Political Studies and Peace Studies.

In 2002 Annika’s professors and her fellow students nominated her for the Barnabas Servant Leadership Award, which she was awarded. Beginning in 2001, Annika worked as a Pew Young Scholar, researching the connection between church as an institution in civil society and its obligation to seek economic justice. In Poverty Initiative, she helped design a college course on poverty.

Along with all this, Annika has faithfully attended the Spokane Corps. After serving as Christian education director and lead female counselor at Camp Gifford, Annika joined the corps and became a soldier. She serves on the worship team and as a small group leader for teens and a youth group leader emphasizing community outreach.

This summer Annika is traveling to Budapest, Hungary with a Christian missions group to teach English for one year. When she returns, she plans to attend graduate school. Annika said: “My goal in life is to serve God by serving his people. I strive to use the gifts he has given me to make a difference in the world.”

Corps Officer Major JoAnn Markham stated, “Annika is a young woman of tremendous strength and integrity. She is a blessing to those who know her, those she serves, and to The Salvation Army.”
