Some Even Fishy

What better sport than to spend the day fishing on the Pacific, and then take home your catch for dinner?

Larry Silva, of the United Anglers Enforcement Committee, has an even better idea. Enjoy the day. Bask in the sun. Reel in the fish. And donate them all to The Salvation Army to feed the homeless.

For the fourth year in a row, Silva has engineered autumn fishing trips in northern California, which have brought more than 4,000 fish into Salvation Army Adult Rehabilitation Centers, Harbor Light and Turk Street kitchens as well as into the homes of low-income people served by the San Francisco Mission and Santa Rosa corps.

The all-day outings are possible because of the enormous efforts of Silva who–if he could–would establish “Fish for the Hungry” trips up and down the coast. It’s a huge job. Throughout the year he works closely with vendors to supply prizes for the day and pleasure boat owners like the Queen of Hearts in Half Moon Bay to donate their vessels. Thanks to him and some very good sports, The Salvation Army has served thousands of fish dinners.
