Volunteers support storm response in Texas Panhandle

Volunteers from The Salvation Army Service Extension Unit in Dimmitt, Texas, mobilized over the weekend to support first responders following powerful storms.
One storm system spawned multiple tornadoes with as many as five confirmed touchdowns around the small panhandle city of Dimmitt. More than 100 homes lost power and several structures and vehicles sustained damage from strong winds, hail and flooding.
Coordinating with the local sheriff, volunteers provided support and refreshment to local law enforcement and first responders.
“One of the strengths of the Service Extension program in Texas is that we can quickly mobilize local disaster volunteers in small communities,” said Alvin Migues, Emergency Disaster Services Director for the Texas Division. “It is important to have trained volunteers on hand locally to respond in the hours immediately following an incident. We are so thankful for our service unit volunteers and their continued dedication and commitment to serve.”
