DR. WILLIAM ANDERSON and Captain David Leslie display the Humanitarian of the Year award.

The Vallejo, Calif. Corps, in recognition of its members’ service, was recently honored by Turo University with The Humanitarian of The Year Award.

Corps officers Captains David and Major Lucy Leslie accepted the award, presented by Dr. Bernard Zeliger, president of Turo, at The Annual Tribute to Martin Luther King, Jr. on Jan. 21 at the school’s Vallejo campus.

The Leslies also received Certificates of Commendation from The City of Vallejo and from Solono County. Along with Dr. Zeliger, other state and local dignitaries were on hand to present the certificates, including Senator Wesley Chesbro, Assemblywoman Patricia Wiggins, Supervisor Barbara Kondylis and Supervisor John Silva. Senator Chesbro announced that the Leslies would also receive a Resolution from the California State Legislature.

Noted physician and civil rights leader Dr. William Anderson, who was a friend and colleague of Dr. Martin Luther King, was the keynote speaker. Dr. Anderson’s topic was “What Would Dr. King Tell Us If He Were Here, Today?”

The annual tribute to Dr. King brought together many from different denominations. The Friendship Baptist Church Choir, The Walnut Creek Presbyterian Church Gospel Choir, and An Elegant Touch of Strings presented inspiring music throughout the evening event.

Leslie thanked Turo University and the community for their recognition and committed The Salvation Army to continue its efforts to serve all the people of Vallejo.
