The Salvation Army responds to West Virginia mine explosions

On the scene at the worst mining disaster in the past 27 years

In the aftermath of one of the worst mining disasters in the past 27 years, according to Department of Labor statistics, Beckley, W. Va., corps officers and volunteers continue to offer emotional and spiritual comfort to the victims’ families and hydration to fire and rescue personnel. More than 650 meals have been served since the explosion.

Major Tom Richmond, area commander in Charleston, W. Va., is currently serving as liaison for the Emergency Operations Center and Homeland Security.

Many area businesses, including the Raleigh Chamber of Commerce, provided assistance to Beckley Corps officers, Captains Rob and Monica Barber, and volunteers in the form of food and snacks for distribution.
