Target funds new library in Modesto

The Modesto Red Shield celebrated the completion of its new library—thanks to a grant from the Target Corporation for $25,000 earmarked for this purpose. The corps was one of 10 Army sites to receive the funding for a learning center.

Through the efforts of Divisional Commander Lt. Colonel Joseph Posillico and Corps Officer Captain Angie Carcamo—and the generosity of the Target Corporation—the dream of reaching more kids from the community became a reality.

Six months after receiving the grant, a grand opening ceremony commemorated the project’s completion. Target representative Pam Zensen, store team leader recruiter, attended the event. Posillico cut the ribbon, allowing access to the building, and people from the community came in to see and experience the new library. Books lined the walls and two new computers were set up at workstations. Also included in the décor were photos of the 35 children who will be tutored here.

The Modesto Red Shield is located in the poorest part of South Modesto where it is surrounded by gangs, poverty and crime. Through its programs, it has been instrumental in redirecting and changing the lives of the children in the neighborhood.

“We have been here for 40 years, making a difference in every single life that comes to our center. We hope and pray that we are here for many years to come,” Carcamo said.
