After 42 years of active officership, Lt. Colonels Jim and Maud Sullivan have entered the ranks of the honorably retired. Jim and Maud are concluding their service as command leaders of Clark County Nevada, where they have seen their growth plans for the Army’s ministry in Las Vegas realized over the past 19 years.

In 1995, the Sullivans were recognized for the quality of their work and their tireless ministry by being promoted to Lt. Colonel. Corps officers at the time–as well as command leaders–they were the only corps officers with that rank for a number of years, prior to the Las Vegas Corps receiving new corps officers last year. In 1991 they were honored as “Frontiersmen of the Year.”

Jim and Maude entered training out of the Eureka, Calif., corps and were commissioned with the Great Hearts Session in 1960. They have served in San Diego, Prescott, Ariz., Riverside, Calif., Boise, Idaho, Honolulu, and Las Vegas.

In addition, Lt. Colonel Maud Sullivan served as the Divisional Guard and Sunbeam Director, and Lt. Colonel Jim Sullivan as the Divisional Youth Secretary in the Cascade Division.

Their tenure in Las Vegas is remarkable, both for its length and its scope. The adult rehabilitation program serves both men and women, has a 100-bed capacity in its residential program, and was awarded the national social services award for excellence in 1989. The five-acre West Owen Avenue complex is home to programs including family services, homeless services, a job development office, a residential home for 42 homeless mentally ill adults, and a 71-unit affordable apartment complex providing transitional housing for graduates of the rehabilitation programs.

Las Vegas has eight thrift stores in operation, including a new superstore. Its innovative gambling recovery program is the only one of its kind.

In retirement, the Sullivans look forward to enjoying the company of their four children, Hazel, Robin, Patty and James, and their 10 grandchildren. Two of their children are officers–Captains Robin and Ray Yant, and Captains James and Laura Sullivan. They will reside at: 10301 George Hart Ct., Las Vegas NV 89129-5006.
