The air was nippy, and an encouraging breeze whipped through Casper, Wyo., as volunteers were out for the beginning of their one, three, or five-mile walk or run for the Laramie County Salvation Army’s “Spring Run Off” fundraiser. A family of five generations, Grandpa pushing great-granddaughter’s stroller, wore race numbers as they waited for the word “Start!” The Army canteen was in readiness, of course, with hot coffee and cold drinks.

Captains Kyle and Martha Trimmer had contacted businesses for possible sponsorship money and local media for ad space. Response was forthcoming from several businesses and two media outlets. KJJL, a local radio station, brought its remote van out to the event, and newspaper and TV reporters were on hand.

Prizes were offered for the family, youth and adult who brought in the most pledge or donation dollars–big prizes, such as YMCA family membership, Blockbuster Video gift certificates, Little Caesar’s Pizza coupons and a $25 thrift store gift certificate.

Event T-shirts were given to the first 25 who brought in $50 or more in pledge or donation dollars. Approximately 75 participants brought in $1,178 worth of pledges and donations.

Volunteers included members of a flight squadron from Warren Air Force Base, Mrs. Wyoming United States, participants from last year’s race, and the Army’s canteen volunteers.

Bystanders see the Run Off as an event that is fun, involves many aspects of the community, and will continue to grow.
