Divisions Gather World Service Gifts

More than $805,500 was raised by the Southern California Division towards the Army’s work around the world. This announcement was made to approximately 1,000 people during a recent unique, informative and inspirational World Services Ingathering meeting.

Matt Gilles, Heather Ames and Christy Carrier virtually brought the mission field to the meeting, impacting the congregation to the needs of the Army worldwide and the importance of our support, through their creative internet presentation, complete with website, video clips and e-mail. Specifically, they provided updates on the work of The Salvation Army in Bosnia, the Czech Republic, India and China.

To help answer specific questions about the Army’s work in other countries and about personnel needs, General Bramwell Tillsley (R) and Commissioners David and Doreen Edwards, Western territorial leaders, were on hand via e-mail and in person.

As a special treat, Lt. Colonel Alida Bosshardt (R) from The Netherlands was present and shared her experiences working on the streets of Amsterdam helping prostitutes and homeless young women find their way to Christ and home.

Southern California Divisional Commander Lt. Colonel Alfred Van Cleef stated this was a “celebration of Southern California’s gift to the world.” True to those words, Salvationists were treated to the rousing music of the Junior Singing Company, 125 strong from all over the division, led by Fay Mallett and accompanied on piano by Chris Mallett.

The United Band set the tone of the celebration under the leadership of B/M Mallett and rounding out the evening, the young adult group, Psalm 151, led by Tom Freeman, rocked the congregation with songs of praise and love.

Tillsley’s message was one of challenge, asking us to listen to God’s call, to respond to that call by sanctifying ourselves to service to others, whether that be in our own community or in a far off one. In response, 10 people committed themselves to missionary service.
