Sierra del Mar gives to World Services

After hearing Captain Sherry McWhorter speak vividly about the hardships of life in Russia, one need not question the importance of giving to The Salvation Army’s world services.

McWhorter, who spent four years in the Republic of Georgia as the Army’s project and auditing officer before being named the social services coordinator (pro-tem) for Booth Memorial Youth & Family Services in Anchorage, Alaska, was the guest speaker at the Sierra del Mar Divisional World Services Ingathering at the Riverside Corps.

Along with her first-hand description of life in Russia, she showed a video that depicted the harsh reality of life in the former Soviet Union and how the Army is trying to ease that pain.

Following McWhorter’s presentation, Lt. Colonel Donald Bell, Sierra del Mar divisional commander, presented a check for $149,855.07 to Lt. Colonel Evelyn Hunter, secretary for business administration.

“Giving to world services is a privilege, not a sacrifice. The hardships of life in Russia are also visible in other countries. That’s why our financial help is so crucial for many lives throughout the world,” said Bell. “I can honestly say that this is one program that is close and dear to my heart.”

The evening also included the presentation of several awards, including the Salvation Army National Award for Excellence in Social Work to Majors Russell and Jacqué Fritz, San Bernardino corps officers.
