She Ate the 7,000,000th Meal

Mary Modie from the Downtown Senior Center in San Francisco sat down to a very special picnic lunch of barbecued chicken and ribs, cole slaw, watermelon and ice cream recently. It was the 7,000,000th meal served by The Salvation Army’s Senior Meals and Services–the largest congregate meal program in San Francisco–and represented 22 years of continuous service to the city.

A 30-piece Salvation Army band played as Golden State Divisional Leaders Lt. Colonels Bettie and Richard Love congratulated Modie at the Band Shell in Golden Gate Park. More than 2,100 people attended the picnic, the highlight of a year-round program that prepares and delivers 1650 meals each day to seniors and disabled persons at 30 neighborhood sites. For those confined in their homes, meals are delivered right to their doors.

Last year, the program served 465,000 meals.
