Salvation Army in Northeast Ohio expands

The Salvation Army of Greater Cleveland launched a series of construction program totaling $35 million this week on the back of the “Strength for today, bright hope for tomorrow” campaign, its first capital campaign in more than 50 years.

The projects range from the West Side to East Cleveland, including: a new 34,182 square-foot building at the Temple Corps Community Center; a new 31,000-square-foot building at the East Cleveland Corps Community Center; a new 29,044-square-foot building at the Zelma George Emergency Family Shelter; and expanding the West Park Corps Community Center to nearly 28,000 square feet—a 52 percent increase from the center’s current size.

The Salvation Army of Greater Cleveland joined East Cleveland Mayor Gary Norton, and representatives from Eaton to break ground on the new East Cleveland Corps, which will provide emergency services and supportive programs in East Cleveland.

“This is The Salvation Army’s first facility in East Cleveland,” said Major Lurlene-Kay Johnson, divisional secretary for Greater Cleveland area services. “We are working closely with our friends in East Cleveland to identify the types of programs that East Cleveland needs. Our new facility will provide the space and flexibility to establish new services and meet the needs of families, children, and seniors.”

The Army broke ground on the new Zelma George Family Emergency Shelter in Downtown Cleveland, which will provide housing for victims of human trafficking.
