Salvation Army celebrates recovery at community rally

Event held in conjunction with National Alcohol and Drug Addiction Recovery Month.

 

In a state where the rate of alcohol abuse is 14 percent higher than the national average and chemical dependency has long been recognized as Alaska’s most significant behavioral health problem, The Salvation Army recovery programs, including Clitheroe Center, the Adult Rehabilitation Program, and Booth Memorial Youth and Family Services, joined together to host the first annual Celebrate Recovery rally.

The rally was organized to support individuals who have made the choice to recover from addictions and reclaim their lives as well as to demonstrate the positive impact of Salvation Army recovery programs in the community.

The event, held in conjunction with National Alcohol and Drug Addiction Recovery Month, featured speeches by Anchorage Mayor Mark Begich, poetry by teen clients at Booth Memorial Youth and Family Services and a personal testimony of encouragement from Clitheroe Center graduate Geoff Vickers.

Vickers helps encourage others in their recovery, often leading Narcotics Anonymous and other 12-step meetings. He also lends his support to the Army, currently serving as the chairman of Clitheroe’s advisory council.
