Safe Haven Ready to Build

A groundbreaking ceremony was recently held in Las Vegas, Nev., for their its Safe Haven facility. For chronically mentally ill homeless people, Safe Haven will provide beds for 14 men and 11 women.

This new program will also have a community response team to help locate homeless people who would benefit from the services available.

Over 85 people attended the groundbreaking, including representatives from the city, county and federal governments. The building is being constructed on a piece of property that was purchased next to the Army’s 5.4 acre Social Service complex, and this new program will be in addition to the Path & Pathways program that also serves many homeless mentally ill people in the community.

According to Lt. Colonel Jim Sullivan, county coordinator, “We have received a $1.4 million grant from Housing and Urban Development (HUD) for construction and operation for three years. We have also received a community development block grant to assist in construction of the facility. This will make The Salvation Army the largest provider of assistance to the chronically mentally ill in the state of Nevada.”
