The Salvation Army’s Adult Rehabilitation Program (ARP) for men in Reno has been honored with a prestigious award from the Association of Paroling Authorities International. (APAI).
APAI presented a recognition plaque to Director of Rehabilitation Services Steve Charter at a conference, held at John Ascuaga’s Nugget in April. The APAI conference drew commissioners from parole boards all over the world.
Engraved on the plaque were the words, “APAI Commissioner Service Award—to The Salvation Army for their dedication and resourceful volunteer services, which has resulted in many offenders’ successful re-entry into society for 2006.”
This is believed to be the first time the award has been presented to a Nevada recipient.
The Salvation Army’s ARP is a six-month, faith-based substance abuse recovery program for men ages 18-62. There is no cost to the participants. The program is funded primarily through thrift store proceeds.
The Reno program has served Northern Nevada for more than 35 years. Approximately 80 percent of the men in the program are referred by the courts and the jail.
