OVER 1,000 enjoyed a hot meal, with venison donated by Sportsmen Against Hunger.

More than 1,200 homeless and under housed, along with other needy people, received a hot meal recently at the 3rd annual Feed The Hungry Dinner, sponsored by The Salvation Army of Reno, Nev., and the Sportsmen Against Hunger (SAH) program of the Safari Club International Foundation (SCI). The event coincided with SCI’s 33rd Annual Hunters Convention at the Reno-Sparks Convention Center (RSCVA).

SAH donated some 4,000 pounds of venison to The Salvation Army, part of which the Eldorado Hotel prepared as a delicious meat loaf dinner. The rest of the meat will be shared with other social service organizations. The Salvation Army and RSCVA hosted the dinner, with help from C & M Food Distributing and Swire Coca Cola.

“The Salvation Army is very grateful to Safari Club International and Sports-men Against Hunger for the venison donation. It provides hungry Reno residents with a hot, nutritious meal during this very cold weather,” said Major Tom Petersen, Reno corps officer. “Our partnership with these sportsmen groups, along with the Eldorado, RSCVA, C & M Food Distributing and other social service organizations, allows us to host the mid-winter event. People aren’t hungry only at Christ-mas!”

“The SAH contribution of venison by SCI’s North American Handgun Hunters Chapter is just one example of the caring sportsmen across the U.S. who, in past months, gave nearly 100,000 pounds of wild game to the hungry,” added Steve Rilenge, SCI Foundation Sportsmen Against Hunger chair and president of the Central Indiana Chapter of Safari Club International. “We are very happy to be returning to Reno in partnership with The Salvation Army in the name of ending hunger, and to have the opportunity to use the new Reno Events Center downtown.”
