Promoted to Glory


MAJOR AKE FORSBERG (R) was promoted to Glory on March 8, 2001 from the Marville Nursing Home in Beaverton, Ore. Born in Svartvik, Sweden on April 21, 1913, he had been in ill health suffering from Alzheimer’s Disease for some time.

He was commissioned in Sweden in 1933. He married Elsa Ehn in 1940 and together they served the Lord for 25 years in the Swedish Territory. Appointments included corps officers of the Stockholm VI and Malmo I Corps. Major also served as a musical evangelist and traveled throughout Europe, Canada and the United States in that capacity.

In 1960 he chose to relocate his family to this country. The Forsbergs were reaccepted as officers in 1968. Throughout their officership in the Western Territory, they served as evangelists, corps officers of the Tabernacle and Los Angeles Congress Hall and entered into retirement from the Los Angeles Evangeline Residence as its manager in 1978.

After retirement, they relocated to Portland, Ore., where they were active at the Portland Tabernacle Corps. Major Forsberg was an accomplished musician of the piano, organ, accordion, guitar and the lute.

He leaves Elsie, his wife of 60 years, children: Lennart, Bengt and Inger, six grandchildren and two great-grandchildren. A memorial service will be held at a later date.

MAJOR GLEN GARTH GILDEN (R) was promoted to Glory Sunday, March 11, 2001, from the Riverside Community Hospital.

Glen was born in Anacortes, Wash., on September 12, 1926. He received his bachelor’s degree from Whitworth College in Spokane. In 1964, while stationed in Portland, Ore., he received his Masters Degree in Social Work.

In 1947, Glen married Melba Osborn, daughter of Major and Mrs. Walter Osborn. They entered the Training College in San Francisco in 1948, and were commissioned the following year as a part of the Peacemakers Session.

Corps appointments followed in Bremerton, Wash., Helena, Mont., Bellingham, Wash., and The Dalles, Ore. In 1956, they opened the Harbor Light Center in Portland, Ore. They served as corps officers in Tucson, Ariz., before being appointed to Intermountain and Southwest DHQs.

In 1973 the Gildens went to the Hong Kong Territory where they served for 8 years. Glen headed the Army’s Social Services department;when Vietnam fell, he helped head the Army’s work for refugees in Hong Kong.

Upon return to the West, other territorial and divisional appointments followed. They next served in the then Latin America North Territory, with headquarters in Mexico City, in THQ appointments.

After returning to the West, the Gildens took command of the Riverside Corps. They retired in September, 1991.

Following retirement, Major served as the Director of the Door of Hope in San Diego. In 1995, he became the Donor Relations Chaplain for the Southern Calif. Division.

He will be missed by his wife, Melba, and children Sharon Gayagas, Glen, Jr., Sheryl Jones, and Capt. Ronald Gilden; 17 grandchildren, including Lt. Mark Gilden, and 14 great grandchildren.

A Celebration of Life Service was held at the Riverside Corps. Lt. Colonel Herbert Wiseman (R) spoke and Captain Guy Hawk, corps officer, presided.

GRACE GRABLE

On March 19, 2001, Grace Grable was promoted to Glory. She was 95 years old. Mrs. Grable was an active soldier and a long time Salvationist of the San Diego Citadel Corps.

Grace will be greatly missed by her children; Mrs. Major Dorothy Brown (R) of Long Beach, CA, Jack Grable of Clearwater, Fla., Bob Grable of Port Townsend, Wash., Betty Tripp of San Diego, Calif., and Donna Pierce of Phoenix, Ariz.

A private graveside service was conducted by Corps Officer Major Darvin Carpenter.

Friends are invited to make a donation to a Grable Memorial Fund originally established by Mrs. Grable in memory of her husband Mr. Elmer L. Grable. The fund is administered by The Salvation Army School for Officer Training and provides needed assistance to new Salvation Army officers.

Gifts may be made payable to The Salvation Army Crestmont College, with a note designating the gift to the CFOT E. Grable Endowment in memory of Grace Grable, and sent to: The Salvation Army, 30840 Hawthorne Blvd., Rancho Palos Verdes, CA 90275.

MRS. MAJOR NATHALIE PETERSON (R) was promoted to Glory on March 8 at 91 years of age.

Nathalie was born December 19, 1909 in Jamestown, NY, where her parents, Brig. Emmanuel and Nathalie Roos were divisional commanders of the Scandinavian work in the Eastern Territory. The Founder’s daughter, Lucy Booth Hellberg, dedicated Nathalie to the Lord in 1910.

Nathalie and Harold were married in 1931 in Pasadena, Calif. Answering God’s call they left Los Angeles Congress Hall where they were soldiers and entered the Training School in San Francisco. They were commissioned with the Valiant Session on June 7, 1943.

They first served as corps officers of the Wenatchee Corps. A year later they were transferred to Great Falls, Mon., and then to Seattle Citadel. In 1957 they moved to San Francisco as CO’s of the Harbor Light, followed with appointments at Oakland Citadel and then to THQ. Her appointment was the special visitor for retired officers. In 1968, the Petersons were appointed as territorial evangelists.

Two daughters, Lorraine Hepburn and Darlene Peterson; five grandchildren and 10 great-grandchildren survive Nathalie.

A private family service was held with Major William Nottle, Concord Corps, officiating.

MAJOR JOHN WINKLEY (R), 94, passed away on February 26, 2001. A member of the Defenders of the Faith Session of 1924, he had lived in Elephant Butte, N.M., since 1973.

He is survived by his wife, Hazel, sons John Winkley of Pueblo, Colo., David Winkley of Detroit, Tex., and daughters Martha Miesel of New York and Agnes Allen of Palmyra, Ind. He had 14 grandchildren and 14 great-grandchildren.

MICHELE PRINCE was promoted to Glory on March 15, 2001, due to cardiac arrest after suffering a severe asthma attack.

Michele was born on Long Island,NY, December 9, 1967. A child who brought immense joy, love and laughter to her family’s lives, Michele entered fully into every activity, at home, at school and at church.

A graduate of Heald Business College, she moved into the business world through Wells Fargo Bank, Royal Viking Cruise Lines, to her present position with Provident Investment Counsel in Pasadena.

The pride and joys of her life were sons Nicholas Russell, born in 1993, and Cameron Michael, born in 1995. Michele felt passionately about many things but nothing more than her two wonderful boys. She provided their own safe, secure, comfortable and loving home.

Michele loved the Lord and sought to serve him with much passion and fervor. She sang with the Tabernacle youth chorus, actively participating in its formation as organizing secretary. Michele’s last evening was very special, provided by her boss, for Nicky’s 8th birthday, they attended the “Back Street Boys” concert. She called on her way home, thrilled with everything.

A memorial service was held at the Pasadena Tabernacle Corps with Colonels George and Joy Church (R) presiding.

She is survived by sons Nicholas and Cameron, parents Russell and Shirley Prince, and sister and brother-in-law Anne-Marie and Samuel Collins Bradley IV, and niece Chelsea.

In lieu of flowers, the family requested donations be made to the Nicholas and Cameron Education fund, C/O William B. Flinn, 860 Walnut Ave., Pasadena CA 91106.
