CarlMajor Archie Donald Carl (R) was promoted to Glory December 19,2000 from the St. Francis Convalescent Pavilion, Daly City, Calif.

Arch was born in 1925 in El Paso, Texas, to Salvation Army parents. He was one of six children, four of whom became officers. After his father’s death, his mother supported the family and they eventually moved to San Mateo, Calif.

After 18 years in the accounting department of the American Can Company, Arch applied for training and was commissioned in 1964 with the Heroes of the Faith Session. He began his career with the Territorial Finance Department, later serving in the Trade department as assistant and the San Jose Men’s Social Service Center as bookkeeper. After serving as chaplain at the Ogden, Utah, ARC, he retired as assistant at the Harbor Light Center.

Arch was an active soldier at the South San Francisco Citadel Corps and was always ready and willing to assist at the Harbor Light Corps and balancing the books for the kettle program. Until cancer kept him from attending, he served as corps treasurer.

A memorial service was held at the South San Francisco Citadel corps with Lt. Colonel R. Eugene Rice (R) speaking and Captain Keith McRevy presiding. The family has requested that an Archie D. Carl and Edna Carl Memorial Fund be established to aid the Booth Memorial Youth and Family Services in Anchorage, Alaska. Frank Newman, a fixture in the Long Beach Citadel Band for more than 50 years, was promoted to glory December 2, 2000, two weeks after his 90th birthday.

A native of Winnipeg, Canada, he moved to the West in 1923 when his parents, Bandmaster and Mrs. Chalres R. Newman, Sr, brother Charlie and sister Ellen settled in Denver.

A soldier in the U.S. Army, Frank was sworn in as a U.S. citizen in Palermo, Sicily; in 1944 he participted in the D-Day invasion at Normandy, France.

He was a quiet, dependable bandsman and faithful soldier at the Citadel. The Frank Newman Memorial Music Scholarship Fund has been established at Long Beach Citadel to give young people the opportunity to develop and use their own music skills for God’s glory.

Frank is survived by his wife of 45 years, Elva; son and daughter-in-law Bob and Gigi Newman, daughter Carole Newman and grandchildren Zachary, Victoria and Lauren.
