JohnsonLt. Colonel Vivian Johnson (R) was recently promoted to Glory from the Waterford Skilled Nursing section in Spokane, Washington.

Vivian was born in Helena, Mont. in 1915 to Salvationist parents, George and Maximillan Johnson. During her teenage years she went to live with Major and Mrs. Carl Reimel, who became her spiritual mentors.

Vivian was commissioned in 1945 as a part of the Fearless Session. She had an impressive and colorful officer career, with appointments in all sections of the Women’s and Children’s Social Service Department. After four years in her first appointment as the assistant of the Los Angeles Booth Home, she served as assistant at the Portland White Shield Home and the Oakland Booth Memorial Hospital. In 1950 Vivian was appointed as superintendent at the San Diego Door of Hope Home. She returned to Los Angeles Booth Memorial in 1956, serving as superintendent over 11 years. In June 1967 she was appointed as the Territorial Women’s and Children’s Social Service Secretary, giving 12 years of outstanding leadership.

Vivian represented the Army at a number of International Conferences of Social Welfare. She was with the first tour group to enter China and make contact with Salvation Army officers. Lt. Colonel Johnson entered into retirement in 1979. She continued working after retirement as the City County Coordinator for Santa Clara County, Calif. Later she moved east and worked as administrator of the Philadelphia Booth Hospital.

A memorial service was held at the Spokane Citadel Corps, 222 E. Indiana Ave., Spokane, WA 99207. The corps officer, Major Ben Markham, officiated.
