Major Helena Sainsbury (R) recently moved on to her heavenly Home for a joyous reunion with her parents, Majors Martin and Annie Sainsbury, and sister, Isabel West Yarbrough.

Born in 1910, as children she and her sister became a vital part of their parents’ corps ministry with their singing, playing guitars and brass instruments, and taking part in all corps activities. Helen offered herself for full-time service, being commissioned in 1930 as part of the Trail Blazers Session.

She shared memories of the Seattle “Skid Road” and the Great Depression soup lines in Vancouver, Wash. The pre-war years found her in Hawaii at the Waioli Tea Room and being “Mother Sainsbury” to children and teens living at the Hilo Girls’ Home. She served in charge of several Northern California corps and in staff appointments at the Training College. When work was reopened in the Philippines she served as divisional youth secretary, and was greatly loved by the people.

After retirement in 1960 she continued her unselfish, humble service and care for others. For the last three years Helena resided at Ridgemont Care Center in Port Orchard, Wash., where she continued to bless others by her sweet spirit.

This beautiful soul will be greatly missed by her many friends and loved ones, including her niece, Major Carol Madsen (R), nephews, Rev. E. David and Richard West, and numerous family members.

There was a graveside service in Gigg Harbor, Wash., and a Celebration of Life Service at the Salem Citadel. Both services were conducted by her niece and nephews. Messages of condolence may be sent in care of Major Carol Madsen, E. 100 Canyon View Rd., Belfair WA 98528-9596.

Cathy Basso, a former Salvation Army officer, commissioned in 1988 with the Messengers of Joy Session, was recently promoted to Glory. She was the wife of Envoy Paul Basso.

A memorial service was held at the Salem, Ore., corps, with Major Leonard Blx officiating. Please remember to keep Envoy Basso and his family in your prayers during this time of loss.

Pearl Frances Holmes, wife of Brigadier Lester Holmes (R) was recently promoted to Glory from her hospital bed in Hanford, Calif., after a lengthy illness.

Mrs. Holmes was born in 1917 in Duncan, Okla. A memorial service was held at the Hanford Corps with Envoy Lyle Morris and A/Captain David Scott officiating. Interment was at Cypress Lawn Memorial Park, Colma, Calif.,

Mrs. Evelyn Pearson, mother of Major John Pearson (R), was promoted to Glory recently at the age of 97.

A Salvationist for about 63 years, she was probably the last surviving soldier among the “Old Swedes” from the Champa Street Corps (Denver Scandinavian).

A memorial service was held at the Denver Citadel Corps with Major William Ricken (R) officiating.
