‘Soldier of Christ – Well Done!’ PROMOTED TO GLORY
Major Herman H. Smith (R)was recently called Home to be with the Lord while on vacation in Georgia.
Smith was born in Kinton, Ore., in 1914. His parents had emigrated from Germany and settled in Portland. When they moved to Fresno he met Mildred Oldenburg, whose parents were in charge of the Fresno Men’s Social. They were married in 1935.
After their second child was born the Smiths relocated to Los Angeles, where he worked for a candy company. In 1942 they entered the Western Training School from Congress Hall Corps. They were commissioned in 1943 and appointed to the Globe, Ariz., Corps. Their third child was born there.
After serving in U.S.O. work in Massachusetts, they returned to the West for three corps officer positions. From 1962 until retirement in 1979 they served in the Men’s Social Service department in Spokane, San Bernardino, Fresno, San Jose, Colorado Springs and Seattle. Smith is survived by his daughter, Mary Lou Wade, of Melrose, Mass.; two sons, Robert of Malden, Mass., and James of Spokane, 11 grandchildren and 14 great-grandchildren. His wife pre-deceased him in 1986.
