Brigadier Verna Davis (R) was recently promoted to Glory from the Portland Adventist Rehabilitation Care Center following a stroke.

Verna was born in Okmulgee, Okla., in 1907, the second of six children. She grew up in an unhappy home, but attending a Salvation Army meeting at 13 changed her life. She found the Lord that day and went on to officer training in the Southern Territory. Eventually she spent 70 years serving in the Army as an accountant and auditor from Atlanta to Oklahoma to Texas. After setting up the divisional headquarters accounting system in Mexico City in 1946, she returned annually for 26 years to assist with divisional audits and budget preparation.

Though slowed down a bit when she broke her hip three years ago, she always had a smile on her face and an encouraging word to all. “She’s always been a shining example of what a Salvation Army officer should be,” says Major Kurt Burger. “She was a grand lady with a fine spirit, and a very caring person.”

At 61 she retired, and then was called back to Atlanta, THQ, to work another four and a half years. After official retirement she returned to Portland and continued working in finance until her 86th birthday.

Verna will be missed by her sister, Floradine Criswell, her family and her corps family.

A memorial service was held at the Portland Tabernacle Corps with Major Ron Strickland officiating. Expressions of sympathy may be sent to her nephew, Major David Hudson, 6955 Turnbridge Way, San Diego CA 92119.

Lt. Colonel David Moulton (R) was promoted to Glory recently from his winter home in Largo, Fla. His children were with him when he heard God’s voice.

Moulton was born in 1910 in St. John’s, Newfoundland, Canada, five months after the death of his father. At age 8 he gave his heart to the Lord and later joined the other four children in the Army’s work. David moved to the U.S. and entered the Training College in New York from the Paterson, N.J., Corps. He and Lt. Grace Morrison were married in 1935 and held corps appointments for 14 years. Three children joined their family. After divisional appointments in the East they transferred to the Western Territory as territorial Youth Secretary. Commands of the Alaska and Southwest Divisions were followed by retirement in 1965 and moving to Wilmore, Kentucky.

For 17 years he ministered to Asbury College students and hosted the fellowship weekly in their home, later overseeing the building of the Student Center.

A memorial service was held at the Clearwater, Fla., Corps. Commissioner David Baxendale (R) presided, and Major John Needham spoke. The funeral service was held at the Asbury Salvation Army Student Fellowship Center with Major Juanita Russell presiding and Dr. Edward McKinley speaking. The Colonel is survived by sons: Arthur of Ellwood City, Penn. and Dr. Allan; daughter Mrs. Joann Stanford, Burlington Vt.; brother Colonel Frank Moulton, and many grandchildren and great-grandchildren.
