Crest for Promoted to Glory

Lt. Colonel William H. Scarlett was promoted to Glory recently from Corona, Calif.

Born in London, England, in 1908, William arrived with his parents in the U.S. in 1912. He married Katherine L. Elmquist and they entered the Training College in Chicago in 1939.

Commissioned as probationary captains, they were appointed to Omaha #4 Corps. A number of corps and social appointments followed in the Central Territory. From 1958, Scarlett fulfilled a number of appointments at territorial headquarters, including director of Salvation Army settlement in Chicago and in the Correctional Services Department.

In 1967 he was appointed to national headquarters as secretary to armed forces and USO, and in this capacity the Colonel received the Chief Medical Director’s Commendation at the VA Hospital in New York for his dedicated service on behalf of the veterans. His final appointment was as correctional services consultant, a work which was close to his heart.

Lt. Colonel and Mrs. Scarlett retired from NHQ in 1973 and moved to Southern California. Mrs. Scarlett was promoted to Glory in 1984.

The Colonel’s love of music has been inherited by his family. His son William is a member of the Chicago Symphony Orchestra and his daughter Ruth is a Songster at Pasadena Tabernacle Corps, Calif.

A memorial service was held at Tustin Ranch Corps, conducted by Envoy John Jones, with a prelude by Major Kathy Wood.

CHARLES RICHMOND NEWMAN– A soldier of the Tustin Ranch, Calif., corps, Charles R. Newman was recently promoted to Glory. He was born in 1908, in Canada. Charles began playing in bands at 12 and continued for 60 years, in corps in Long Beach and Seattle. He married Opal John in 1936 and worked as a shipbuilder during World War II, then as a housing building superintendent. He is survived by daughter Joan Slack, son Richard Newman, two granddaughters and two great-granddaughters.
