Crest for Promoted to Glory

With loved ones at her side, Mrs. Sr. Major Dorothy Hill was recently promoted to Glory from Long Beach Memorial Hospital.

Dorothy Irish was born in 1908 in Chehalis, Wash. and assisted at the Kelso, Wash., Corps before entering the Training College. She was commissioned with the Victory Session in 1926, going first as a probationary lieutenant to Vancouver, Wash.; then to Tacoma and Port Angeles. Her marriage to Lt. Edward Hill in 1927 was blessed with four children. One, Edward, has been promoted to Glory.

Together, she and her husband commanded a number of corps in the Western territory, in the Northwest, Cascade, and Intermountain Divisions. In 1958, as senior majors, they transferred to Pomona, Calif., where he was promoted to Glory in November 1959 as a result of an automobile accident. Having been ill, she retired in May 1960.

Dorothy’s organizational skills contributed to their success as corps officers. As they grew solid congregations and grounded them in the faith, she was the bookkeeper. She was a creative programmer and active in producing spiritual dramas. Sometimes her cornet was the corps’ only music.

A memorial service was held at Long Beach Temple Corps with Lt. Colonel Herbert Wiseman (R) officiating. Private interment was at the Inglewood Park Cemetery.

She is survived by three children: Major Gerald Hill (R); Major Dale Hill, Dorothy Martin; 15 grandchildren and their families, one of whom is Lt. Edward (Dusty) Hill.

There are also many great-grandchildren and one great-great granddaughter; sister, Velma Wischnesky; and brother, Walter Irish. Cards and messages of sympathy may be sent to Major Dale Hill at 1360 Stonewood Ct., San Pedro CA 90732.
