A Salvation Army officer for 76 years, Colonel George E. Engel (R) went peacefully to his heavenly home on December 23.

Born in 1908, Engel entered the training school in 1924 at age 15, out of Butte, Mont., and was commissioned in 1925 with the Charioteer session. During his officership, he served in corps and Men’s Social Service appointments in the Northwest, Intermountain, and Northern California Divisions. He also served with the USO mobile canteens in Indio and Salt Lake City.

In 1930, he married Captain Esther White, who was promoted to Glory in 1945. They had three children, Robert, George, and Mary. He later married Captain Florence Lowell, who continued as his helpmate for 50 years.

On loan to national headquarters in 1955, he was appointed to Seoul, Korea, in 1957. Actively involved with orphans, he loved the Korean people and the country. In 1965, he was appointed officer commanding in Singapore.

His final appointment was as manager of the Evangeline residence in San Francisco, and in 1975, they retired from active service.

In addition to his wife, Florence, he is survived by his daughter, eight grandchildren, eight great-grandchildren and one great, great grandchild. Sons (Majors) Bob and Ed (George, Jr.) preceeded him in death.
