Promoted to Glory

Envoy Clinton D. Steele Sr.

Following a long illness, lifelong Salvationist Envoy Clinton D. Steele Sr. was promoted to Glory on Sept. 18, 2010, from Johnson City, Tenn. He was born on Nov. 5, 1919.

Steele was a bandmaster for over 50 years until his eyesight failed. He served at the San Francisco (Calif.) Mission Corps and most recently at the Bristol (Tenn.) Corps as bandmaster and 17 years as the manager for The Salvation Army Silvercrest in San Francisco.

As a trombonist, he played in The Salvation Army Band, the U.S. Navy Band and also with Tommy Dorsey. He loved music and taught his grandchildren to play brass instruments.

“He Touched Me” and “The King Is Coming” were his two favorite songs. His favorite Scripture was I can do all things through Christ who strengthens me (Philippians 4:13).

Steele was preceded in death by his first wife Arline Ione Steele and his son Major Clinton D. Steele Jr. He is survived by his wife Envoy Dorothy Hayden Steele, daughter Judy Davis (Salt Lake City Corps), daughter-in-law Major Georgia Steele (R), five granddaughters: Tina Bentley, Major June Nicloy, Darlene Fischer, Joyce Koplin and Ruth Neiminski; one grandson, David Steele III; 13 great-grandchildren and two great-great-grandchildren.
