Mrs. Brigadier Annie Mae Van Gould

Mrs. Brigadier Annie Mae Van Gould was promoted to Glory October 20 from Santa Clarita Home for the Elderly in Valencia, California. She served 42 years as an Army officer.

Annie Mae Carroll was born in 1911 in Rowe, Massachusetts to Salvationist parents. When Annie was a teenager, her family moved to Greenfield, Mass., and they attended the corps there. In 1930, Annie entered the training college in New York and was commissioned with the Climbers Session in 1931.

She served in several appointments as a single officer before marrying Captain John Van Gould in 1939. They ministered together in corps, divisional and territorial appointments in the Eastern Territory.

Annie was especially interested in the girl guard program, particularly in the area of pioneer camping, and was called on throughout her career to undertake girl guard leadership roles, including the directorship of girl guard camps. She also had a lengthy involvement in Church Women United, serving on its state executive boards in Maine, Connecticut and New Jersey. In 1971 she was nominated for New Jersey State President of Church Women United, but declined after receiving an Army appointment to another state.

Retiring in 1973, the Van Goulds lived in Mission Hills, California for nearly 20 years before moving to Sylmar, Calif. They soldiered at the San Fernando Valley Corps, where Annie served as corps secretary, corps cadet counselor, Sunday school adult class teacher, home league chaplain and corps council member. Brigadier Van Gould, Annie’s husband for 61 years, was promoted to Glory in 2000. She then moved to the personal care home in Valencia.

Services were conducted by Lt. Colonels Herbert and Donna Wiseman and Captains Carlos and Gildete Souza.

Surviving Mrs. Brigadier Van Gould are daughter Joanne Pellegrino; brothers James Carroll and Raymond Carroll; four grandchildren and nine great-grandchildren.
