Promoted to Glory

Mrs. Brigadier Edwina Kendoll was promoted to Glory on March 12, 2003 from the Garden of Friends Christian Adult Care Home in Vancouver, Wash. Born in Bisbee, Ariz. on December 28, 1924 to officer parents Cleve and Bessie Irby, Edwina was a third generation officer.

Edwina entered the Training College from the Olympia, Wash. Corps and was commissioned in June 1944 with the Liberty Bell Session.

While serving as assistant at the Los Angeles Southwest Corps, Edwina met Lewis Kendoll, who was an assistant at the Glendale, Calif. Corps. After their marriage in 1947 they served in corps throughout the West in California, Oregon, Washington, and Colorado. They also served at territorial and divisional headquarters. For health reasons, the Kendolls retired early, in 1983, to Vancouver, Wash.

Mrs. Brigadier Kendoll is survived by her four children: twin daughters, Jean Marks of Vancouver, Wash. and Joan Souders of Grandview, Wash.; Joyce Thompson of McCall, Idaho and son James of Washougal, Wash., nine grandchildren and five great-grandchildren. She also leaves behind two sisters, Maurine Curl and Ruth Yarbough, and two brothers, Major Carl Irby and Earl Irby, and many nieces and nephews. Preceding her in death were her husband Lewis, sister Armine Buntz and brother Clinton Irby.

A memorial service was held in Vancouver, Wash. with Lt. Colonel Linda Griffin leading and Edwina’s nephew, Rev. Lyle Kendoll, speaking. Mrs. Joan Souders officiated at the committal service.

Major Donna Lewis was promoted to Glory on March 13, 2003 from St. Paul, Minn.

Born Nov. 16, 1933 in Superior, Wis. to Holton and Rose Solid, Donna worked at The General Motors Corpora-tion as a bookkeeper until she met and married Dillmond Lewis in 1958.

The Lewises moved to Calif. and entered training from the Redwood City Corps. After Donna was commissioned in 1968 with the Messengers of the Faith Session, Dillmond was reaccepted as an officer from the Central Territory.

Their first appointment was to command the work in Juneau, Alaska. For the next 27 years they served in the Western Territory in San Diego, Oxnard, Ontario, El Centro, Newark and Bakersfield, Calif. In 1989 they were transferred to Idaho Falls, Idaho. Their last appointment before retirement was to Eugene, Ore. as Lane County Coordinators, where they spent five years.

In 1996 the Lewises retired and moved to St. Paul, Minn. to be closer to their family.

Donna was an encourager to many. Even while fighting cancer, she continued to teach lessons of patience, devotion, and courage, always smiling even to the end.

Donna leaves behind her husband, Dillmond; three sons, Dale of Maplewood, Minn., David of Pasadena and Dwayne of Oceanside, Calif.; three grandchildren, Carl, Kelcie and Kyle; daughters-in-law, Cheryl (Irby) Lewis and Jani Lewis, and other beloved family members.

The funeral service was held at The Salvation Army Lakewood Temple in Maplewood, Minn. with Major John Crampton presiding.
