Prayer walks: who do we pray for?

The world’s greatest athletes are here at the Olympics. All have worked hard and made sacrifices to get to this place, this defining moment. It’s hard sometimes to know whom to root for. For instance, in figure skating, how do you choose between Michelle, Sasha, or Sarah? All are great. All the athletes here deserve our support, our cheers.

In the midst of all this excitement, our More Than Gold teams found time to turn our thoughts to God and to others, too, in our scheduled prayer walks.

At first I didn’t know exactly what to pray for. Of course I prayed for the people in Salt Lake and the visitors to the Games — that they would find a personal relationship with Christ. But I wanted to pray specifically for different things.

I stopped, reflected, and observed to see what I could pray for.

I saw a group of athletes from the People’s Republic of China walk by. I began to pray for that country and for the church there.

Walking further I saw all the flags of every nation displayed in Olympic Square. I recalled the verse from Matthew, “Go in to all the world and make disciples of all nations.” People from all these nations were here in Salt Lake City, so I prayed for opportunities to sow seeds of the gospel so that more could find Jesus.

Finally, in the mall, I saw a statue of Franklin, Adams, and Jefferson kneeling in prayer and I prayed for the USA and for its leaders.

It doesn’t take much to figure out what to pray for. All you need to do is just look around you!
