Great Victory Congress To Reach More Than 10 Different Cultures

“The rich cultural diversity of the Western Territory is reflected in corps growth and in the Congress registrations,” says Captain Donna Ames, who serves as territorial evangelism, cross-cultural, and adult ministries secretary. “The Congress will bring together a large number of Salvationists whose first language is not English, and we have to be ready for them.”

That will be a considerable task. Preliminary indications are that, of the projected 5,200 delegates at next year’s Great Victory Congress, approximately 900, or 17 percent of the total, will require translation at the major meetings. Most of these delegates speak Spanish, but there will also be many who speak Laotian, Chinese, and Korean, and even more who speak Portuguese, Marshallese, Tagalog, Visayan, Chuukese, and Pohnpeian.

“We’ve never had a challenge quite like this one,” said Captain Kenneth Hodder, Congress coordinator, “but it’s the kind of problem we like. Scripture says that we are one in the Spirit, and this will give us a chance to prove it.”

In addition to translation services, the schedule for the Congress will include an Hispanic Rally on Saturday evening and Prayer Breakfasts for Chinese, Laotian, and Korean-speaking delegates. “Almost one out of five delegates speak a language other than English,” said Ames, “and that will bring an excitement and diversity to this Congress that we’ve never seen before.”

Esta será una ardua tarea. Las primeras indicaciones demuestran que de los 5,200 delegados que se estima asistirán al Congreso Triunfal, aproximadamente 900 de ellos; equivalente al 17% del total, requerirán traducciones durante las reuniones principales. La mayoría de estos delegados hablan español, pero también habrán muchos que hablan laosiano, chino y koreano. Además de los servicios de traducción, el programa del Congreso incluirá un Rally Hispano la noche del sábado y un Desayuno de Oración para los delegados de habla china, laosiana y koreana. “Casi uno de cada cinco delegados hablan un lenguaje distinto al inglés,” dijo la Capitana Ames, “y eso traerá el entusiasmo y la diversidad que nunca antes habíamos visto.”
