Portland Tabernacle moves to new home

Soldiers on the march to the new Portland Tabernacle Corps building.

The Portland Tabernacle Corps of the Cascade Division—after years in a temporary location and a two-year planning period—recently moved into its permanent new home.

Commissioner Philip Swyers, Western territorial commander, dedicated the place and the people in a ceremony that included presentations by corps soldiers and representatives of the architectural and construction firms.

Prior to the ceremony, a procession led by Corps Officers Lieutenant Raymond and Major Nancy Dihle, with brass and percussion, moved the cross and the flags across the street from the old building to the new. Katie DeMuth and Major Gary Kyle sang a song of dedication. Following Swyers’s dedicatory comments, a time of commitment ended with a prayer of dedication by Major Donald Hostetler, Cascade divisional commander.

After a luncheon, soldiers and friends again gathered in the sanctuary for a time of praise and testimony. In his message, Major David Hudson, territorial secretary for personnel, reminded everyone that we are to be about the Father’s business, no matter our location.

On display was a collection of Portland Tabernacle memorabilia, dating back to the beginnings of the Army in Portland and including many familiar faces now scattered across the territory as well as those pioneers who have gone before.
