Women Clergy

Women clergy from seven denominations will gather in San Antonio, Tex., April 23-26, 1998, for the third bi-annual “Come to the Water Conference–Then and Now: The Journey of Holiness.”

Plenary speakers will include Major Anne Pickup, discipleship and lay leadership director of The Salvation Army Western Territory; Rev. Dr. Delia Nuesch-Olver, the national director of social, urban, and ethnic ministries for the Free Methodist Church of North America; Rev. Zena Toussaint, assistant pastor of the Brooklyn Beulah Church of the Nazarene; and Rev. Jeannette Flynn, director of church and ministry services for the Church of God (Anderson).

More than 20 workshops will be offered on topics from “Beginning Ministry in Mid-Life” to “Spiritual Care for Clergy.”

Susie Stanley, conference convener and professor of historical theology at Messiah College, explains the purpose of the conference: “Wesleyan/Holiness denominations have been ordaining women for more than 100 years. This conference brings together women from churches with a long-held legacy of ordaining women in order to celebrate where we have come from and to equip us for where God will lead us in the new millennium.”

More than 400 women actively engaged in or preparing for church-related ministries are expected to attend from the seven sponsoring denominations: Brethren in Christ Church; Church of God (Anderson); Church of the Nazarene, International; Evangelical Friends, International; Free Methodist Church; The Salvation Army; and the Wesleyan Church.

The conference is endorsed by the Christian Holiness Association and the Wesleyan Theological Society.
