Costa Mesa—The Southern California Division/Orange County Command hosted the National Advisory Board, September 19 and 20. National Commander Commissioner Todd Bassett welcomed the Board to Orange County.

Among the 27 National Advisory Board members in attendance were Peace Corps Director Gaddi Vasquez, Robert Byers, Robert Alspaugh, Marlene Klotz Collins and Elizabeth Koch. Also in attendance was Robert Pace, from the San Francisco area, one of the West’s newest members.

The Board’s mission, here to carry out the business of the Lord’s work on earth, was best stated by Board Chairman Edsel Ford II, “We are here not to give a hand out; but a hand up.”

While hurricane Isabel was creating havoc on the east coast, the various committees, including Disaster Services, met on Friday, September 19. That evening, “California Cameos – Celebration and Challenge” was presented at the Anaheim Adult Rehabilitation Center; hosted by Administrator Captain Dennis Earnhart. In her opening remarks, Western Territorial Commander Linda Bond mentioned, “The wild, wild west… What I like is that the Southern California Division is generous and represents a diversity of cultures, half of which are non-English speaking.” Southern California Divisional Commander Lt. Colonel Alfred R. Van Cleef stated, “The Division is reaching out and touching people’s lives.” The program’s content reflected that cultural diversity with selections performed by the Tustin Ranch Band and Songsters, the Los Angeles Korean Corps Fan Dancers, the Combo Latino del Sur de California and a steel drum Benediction performed by Compton Corps Commanding Officer Captain Martin Ross.
