In the closing banquet of the 2012 National Social Services and Disaster Management Conference, The Salvation Army recognized individuals and territories for excellence in social services and emergency disaster services (EDS).

“All of us working together make the Army what it is,” said Major Betty Israel, national social services secretary, “and, together, we come to the public table at the federal and state level; thank you for what you do.”

Territorial program excellence and achievement recipients, who also receive a $5,000 program grant award,  include: The Chicago Metropolitan Division Child Care Programs in Chicago, Ill. (Central); the Anew Center: Domestic Violence and Rape Crisis Program in Jamestown, N.y. (East); the Red Shield Family Lodge in Atlanta, Ga. (South); and the Haven: West Los Angeles Veterans Affairs Healthcare Center in Los Angeles (West).

Individual excellence in social work award recipients include: Louise Simons (Central), divisional social services secretary for the Northern Division for 16 years; Florence Rhue (East), director of children’s services for The Salvation Army in Eastern Pennsylvania and Delaware Division for almost 20 years; Deronda Metz (South), director of social services for the Charlotte, North Carolina area command; and Lawrence Williams (West), executive director for the Army’s Honolulu Addiction Treatment services and a 30-year Army employee.

Individual recipients of the first-ever disaster management “Sleeves Rolled Up” award include: Jim Daly (Central), who became an EDS volunteer in Minnesota in 2000 after retiring as a police lieutenant and has since logged 10,000 volunteer hours; Allister MacLeod (East), who became an EDS volunteer in Massachusetts following 9/11; Carlene Campbell (South), who helped develop a formal relationship between the Army and Kiwanis International; David Sherman (West), a ministry leader at the White Mountain Outpost in Arizona and director of EDS activities, including serving as a chaplain for the local fire department.

“We want to be worthy of those we serve,” said Commissioner William Roberts, national commander. “We all strive for excellence. God bless you in the service you give.”
