a senior to the Puyallup Silvercrest.

Low-income seniors will have a safe, affordable place to call home at The Salvation Army’s Puyallup Silvercrest. The new 42-unit apartment residence was recently dedicated by Northwest Divisional Commander Lt. Colonel Evelyn J. Hunter.

“The Salvation Army entered into partnership with government to provide housing for the elderly as part of its ministry to seniors,” she said. “In 48 locations through the Western United States, seniors have a home called Silvercrest. Today we dedicate number 49.”

The Salvation Army committed $250,000 toward the construction of the 40,544 square foot senior residence, which cost $3.4 million. The U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD) provided a $3.07 million capital advance, and the Washington State Housing Finance Fund and Pierce County contributed funds for sewers and water service.

Puyallup Commanding Officer Lt. Robert Birks welcomed senior citizens and dignitaries to the grand opening, which is next to the Senior Center at the corps. Silvercrest Administrator Major Linda Thomas led the audience in song, and Divisional Secretary Major Joe Hoogstad thanked those who helped create the residence.

Hunter added, “Our hope is that in this setting people’s lives will be easier, that the lonely will find new friends and activities to fill their days, that those who come to live in Silvercrest will find new challenges in living through the life-enriching programs of the Puyallup Valley Corps Senior Drop In Program.”
