Majors Clinton and Georgia Steele enter retirement

MAJORS CLINTON AND Georgia Steele are presented their retirement certificates by Alaska Divisional Commander Captain Bob Rudd. Major Cal Prouty (third from left) led the prayer of dedication and Major Florence Murray was a flag bearer.


Having served a combined total of 54 years as officers, Majors Clinton and Georgia Steele recently retired.

In 1957, Clinton met Georgia Satterwhite at Youth Councils in the Northern California Division. They married in 1960. For a while Clint served in the U.S. Navy and then worked at the naval shipyard in San Francisco. Georgia stayed at home with their family, which grew to include four children, and was a Sunbeam and Guard leader.

Eventually the Steeles were called to full time service with The Salvation Army. They entered the School for Officers’ Training out of the San Francisco Mission Corps. In 1975 they were commissioned with the Soldiers of the Cross Session.

Early in their career they served as assistant corps officers in Grand Junction, Colo. and Ogden, Utah, and as assistants at the Denver Harbor Light Center and the Long Beach ARC. They were then appointed as corps officers first in Bend, Oregon, then in La Grande, Oregon.

In 1983 they returned to ARC work as assistants at the Los Angeles ARC. Next they were assigned as corps officers to Haines, Alas. In 1988 they served as assistants in Bellingham, Wash., before reporting to Anacortes and then Walla Walla, Wash. as corps officers.

The Steeles went back to Alaska in 1998, where they were corps officers in Gateway, Mat-Su Valley and Resurrection Bay. They will be retiring in Palmer, Alaska.

The couple has been blessed with four children: Tina Steele Bentley, Major June Steele Nicloy, Anita Darlene Fisher, and Clinton David III. They also have several grandchildren: Kevin Haefer, Richard, Amber, Jennifer and Debra Jo Johnson, Jessica Bentley, David IV and Mara Steele.
