Corrections on Micronesia

Thank you for running our articles on Envoy Hermes Otis and our Chuuk Corps in the May 8 issue of New Frontier. I would like to point out, however, that the Federated States of Micronesia, of which Chuuk is one of four states, is not a part of the Marshall Islands, as was suggested by the headline for the articles.

The islands of our part of the Pacific Ocean are known, in toto, as the Micronesian Islands. The indiginous race is known as Micronesian. Independent nations in the Micronesian Island group include: The Republic of the Marshall Islands; Kiribati; Nauru: The Federated States of Micronesia; and Palau. The Commonwealth of the Northern Marianas is a commonwealth of the USA, and Guam is an unincorporated territory of the USA.

Perhaps because The Salvation Army was opened in the Marshalls several years before it was opened in the Federated States of Micronesia and Guam, many Salvationists in our territory—including those in Hawaii—tend to mistakenly label any island in the north Pacific that is not a Hawaiian island as being part of the Marshalls. The population of the Marshall Islands, just a few more than 40,000 people, actually represent only one/ninth of the population of the region. The population of Chuuk is approximately 45,000, and the population of Guam is more than 150,000.

What a great idea, when you print articles, to identify which of the West’s six strategic priorities it is addressing. In a recent issue, I particularly enjoyed reading about Escondido’s community concert fundraiser. It must have been a wonderful event.
Congratulations to Captains Ball and to that corps on a successful night. Reports of that type are inspiring and give us a chance to rejoice in the work the Lord is accomplishing throughout the West.

I really enjoyed Bob Gregg’s article in the recent New Frontier. I have a quote on my office wall from the book about The Salvation Army being the most effective organization (Professors Gary Hamel and C. K. Prahalad) that says “Most companies are over-managed and under-led. It is fair to say that in most corporate headquarters, far more effort goes into the exercise of control than into the provision of direction.”
