FIRST KETTLES?

kettleReference the article, “West gives Taiwan first kettles,” in the January 26, 2001 New Frontier. For your information, the first kettle campaign in Taiwan was not in 2000 as reported, but in 1966.

The enclosed photograph was taken in Taipei Taiwan in 1966, while I was stationed with the U.S. Air Force in Taipei.

The photo with the little girl is a P.R. photo showing Mrs. Captain Van den Hoek, wife of the divisional officer; Mrs. Diane McEaneney, and Beppy Van den Hoek.

Note: Pioneered in 1928 by Colonel Yasowo Segawa, work in Taiwan was curtailed by World War II. Following initiatives by American servicemen Lester Lovestead and Robert McEaneney, the work was officially re-established in October 1965 by Colonel and Mrs. George Lancashire (R).

Formerly linked with Hong Kong, it became a separate region on January 1, 1997.
