Progress report: The Salvation Army Tenderloin housing and Ray & Joan Kroc Corps Community Center

Since construction began in June 2006 of The Salvation Army Tenderloin Housing and Ray & Joan Kroc Corps Community Center, Cahill Construction has been busy turning a dirt lot into a new and vibrant neighborhood facility—making Joan Kroc’s vision a reality.

The courtyard gym has been laid out, framed by four floors of steel webbing and concrete. The pool is all but ready for water and amid the sounds of construction, you can almost hear the music in the dance studio above.

Once open, residents will learn life skills, receive employment advice and abuse counseling, and be guided by caseworkers. Kids will be able to take part in after school programs and a summer day camp. A meals program, recreation and therapy classes will be offered to seniors. Swim lessons for all ages and aquatic therapy will be available. Basketball, badminton and volleyball will be taught and played. Youth in the foster program will be able to participate in life skills classes and receive employment advice, medical consultation and counseling.

In a little bit more than a year, this Kroc Center will be open and people both young and old from differing walks of life will be welcomed inside this community oasis. Dreams will be captured, potential will be realized and lives will be changed.
