General William Booth, Founder of The Salvation Army, was a larger-than-life figure. Did you ever wish you could have known Booth the man? I Knew William Booth presents 15 vignettes by people from many walks of life who knew him personally. Among the writers are George Scott Railton, H. Rider Haggard, William T. Stead, Harold Begbie and Booth’s eldest son, Bramwell.

Some of the accounts are amusing, some moving—but all are challenging as they give us a picture of a man who had a passion for souls and a vision for the kingdom of God with a far-reaching impact.

From the perspective of almost one hundred years, we find it difficult to know exactly who William Booth was, how he accomplished all that did, and what he was like in his personal life. These pictures by his contemporaries reveal the man as a real, individual personality.

As the introduction states, “We can never know the full workings of William Booth’s mind, or the deep feelings of his heart, but snapshots such as these bring us a little closer to the man behind the mask of ‘General’ of The Salvation Army.”

The editor, R.G. Moyles, is a Professor Emeritus at the University of Alberta in Edmonton, Canada, and is the author or editor of several other books, including William Booth in Canada. He is a member of the Edmonton Temple corps.

Perusing this book will bring the reader a little closer to knowing the man whose vision founded and energized a movement that became the Army we know today.
