Horwood sent to Sri Lanka

Captain Ted Horwood, territorial world missions secretary, has joined Salvation Army relief efforts in Colombo, Sri Lanka, where he will lead a team of ex-pat officers who will begin the recovery/rehabilitation phase of the relief effort.

Horwood will be coordinating activities, including proposal development and accessing United Nations funding and resources.

While Horwood prepared to go to the frontlines of this relief effort, his children, Micah and Jessica Horwood, began working with their high school (Bishop Montgomery in Torrance, Calif.) to raise funds for the Army’s work. “The teachers and students have already raised $500 in one day and they’ve only just started!” states Captain Debbie Horwood.

Micah and Jessica’s story and others like them inspired Western territorial leadership to put out a territory-wide challenge to mobilize jr. soldiers, corps cadets, Boy Scouts, Girl Guards, Sun-beams, Adventure Corps members, and any other willing youth to raise funds for the Army’s tsunami relief effort.

“What a great way to start off this ‘Year for Children and Youth,’” states Captain Kyle Smith, territorial youth secretary. “We’re mobilizing our own young Salvationists to make a real difference in the lives of other young people who have suffered so greatly in this terrible tragedy.”
