Gregorys retire from active duty

Majors Robert and Marilyn Gregory


After serving a combined total of nearly 90 years, Majors Robert and Marilyn Gregory recently retired from active duty as Salvation Army officers.

Cadets Bob Gregory and Marilyn Bawden entered the School for Officer Training in San Francisco in the fall of 1958. After being commissioned as lieutenants, Bob was sent to assist at Seattle Harbor Light and Marilyn to assist at San Francisco Mission Corps. They married in 1961 and were appointed youth officers at Oakland Citadel Corps.

The Gregorys have served as corps officers in Redwood City and Hayward, Calif.; Tacoma, Wash.; Kauluwela Mission Corps, Hawaii; and in several appointments in the Intermountain Division. Divisional headquarters assignments for Bob and Marilyn, respectively, include: finance secretary and League of Mercy secretary at Northwest DHQ, divisional secretary and Home League secretary at Intermoun-tain DHQ, and, following a brief appointment at Southern California DHQ, divisional secretary and League of Mercy secretary at Cascade DHQ; and general secretary and women’s ministries secretary at Southwest DHQ.

For the past eight and a half years, the Gregorys have enjoyed the work and ministry of the ARC, serving at San Bernardino ARC, ARC Command at territorial headquarters, and finishing with their assignment as administrator and director of special services at San Francisco ARC.

Their retirement service at the San Francisco ARC was a celebration of God’s faithfulness in their lives and service. Lt. Colonels Donald and Debora Bell officiated at the service, which featured special music and reflections by family members and friends.

On hand were the Gregory children: Cherilee, with her husband, Scott Ramsey; Susan, with her husband, John Burrows; and Steve, with wife Michele; and the seven grandchildren: Megan, Daniel, Emily Joy and Rebecca Ramsey; Greg and Erica Davis; and Dylan Gregory.
