Glendale Silvercrest Begins Construction

To help ease a shortage of affordable housing for older adults, the Southern California Division broke ground on a new 75-unit Silvercrest residence in the City of Glendale, a community with a population of 120,000, located 25 miles east of Los Angeles.

Although HUD provided the bulk of the funds for the new residence, Divisional Secretary Major Bruce Jones stated the new $9.5 million facility is a joint project also funded by The Salvation Army and the City of Glendale.

Divisional Commander Lt. Colonel Alfred R. Van Cleef, Corps Officers Majors Floyd and Lola Bacon and other Salvation Army officials were joined for the groundbreaking celebration by the Mayor of Glendale, Eileen Givens, retired U.S. Congressman Carlos Moorhead and other community and civic leaders.

“For senior citizens who need affordable housing on a long-term basis, The Salvation Army enables seniors of modest means to live independently in an attractive, safe environment. My hope is that when the public thinks of The Salvation Army, they think of integrity and response to human needs and a high Christian ethic,” said Van Cleef.

Once completed in the summer of 1999, the new residence will offer a full-range of recreational and spiritual programs in conjunction with the Army’s Glendale Center of Worship and Service.

Each apartment in the facility will have a patio or balcony and be equipped with a stove, refrigerator, garbage disposal, individual heating and air conditioning unit and carpet.
