In this season of Thanksgiving, I think about the many things I’m thankful for: family and friends…food and shelter…and especially God’s grace! That grace is also evident in the many ways the Army is touching lives throughout the West. Here are a few “thanks-giving” events…

Laura women walk for health
Fifteen women ages 20-50 participated in the Laura Corps’ first walk-a-thon, held to raise awareness of The Salvation Army’s health education program, which includes HIV/AIDS prevention and feeding malnourished children. Organized by the corps’ Young People’s League (YPL), it was sponsored by local government and businesses as well. Envoys Almen and Setsuko Taulon, in-charge, and Captain Charles Fowler, Marshall Islands coordinator, participated in the opening and closing ceremonies.

Women’s Auxiliary hits mark
The Puyallup Valley, WA, Corps Women’s Auxiliary held their second fund raiser to help purchase a 15-passenger van for the corps, which will be used by the Silvercrest residents, senior center, and youth groups. President Velta Andrews was pleased with the outcome, as were Corps Officers Captains Mark and Noelle Nelson. The event included a brunch, a car show put on by the Tacoma Model-T Club, and a bake sale.

Cascade wins Telly Awards
Grady Britton and the Cascade Division were recently honored with two Telly Awards for excellence in television advertising. The silver “winner” statuette was given for a 60-second public service announcement featuring Portland area Salvation Army programs. The bronze “finalist” statuette was given for a 30-second PSA on the Army’s West Women’s and Children’s Shelter. The PSAs were produced by Grady Britton have run on local AT&T cable stations throughout the year. More than 11,000 entries were received this year.

Something new in Flagstaff
 Flagstaff, AZ, is home to two new thrift stores, reports Capt. Frank Severs, who with his wife Susan, serve as corps officers. Fine clothing, antiques, and collectibles are featured at one location.

Antique Appraisal Festival
 The Salvation Army had its own version of “The Antique Roadshow” when professional antique dealers gave verbal appraisals for up to five items per person at the Army’s Colorado Springs thrift store. At a suggested donation of $5 per person, more than $260 was raised and $2,500 in store merchandise was sold. Proceeds benefitted The Salvation Army Adult Rehabilitation Center, under the direction of administrators Lts. Dennis and Tawnya Stumpf.

Christmas in September
 The Sana Monica Women’s Auxiliary hosted a successful “Christmas in September” boutique, fashion show and luncheon recently, reports Corps Officer Major Marilyn Bawden. Motion picture and TV actress Barbara Billingsly was honorary celebrity chairperson; Louise Gabriel was event chairperson and Doris Farrar is auxiliary president.
