According to Capts. David and Diane Ebel, corps officers, the new Turlock, Calif., Corps community center is only $450,000 away from its fund-raising goal of $2.8 million. It will be the city’s largest vehicle for delivering social services to Tur-lock’s underprivileged. Ebel notes the facility will also be a distribution site for the Senior Nutrition Program, which will distribute healthy, hot meals to low-income seniors who may make that their only hot meal of the day.

CARING PARTNER
The San Pedro, Calif., corps recognized Ralph’s Market #87 for their many years of daily giving food items to them. “It would be impossible to run an effective food pantry and meet the immediate needs of individuals if it weren’t for Ralph’s Market,” said Corps Officer Lt. Jorge Garnica. An average of 305 individuals each month receive food, shelter, utility, transportation, or clothing assistance from the corps.

SOUP’S ON!
Union Pacific Railroad Foundation Special Representative, Richard Hartman, presented a $10,000 check to Captain Kyle Trimmer, Cheyenne, Wyo., corps officer, and Lynette Baker, grantwriter, recently. The generous donation will help upgrade Cheyenne’s soup kitchen equipment. A commercial refrigerator and shelving, along with other needed items, will improve the efficiency of the soup kitchen which feeds the hungry seven days a week.

“We are ecstatic about the grant,” said Trimmer. “It will allow us to do things we have needed to do for years.”

ON THE AIR
Lt. Colonel Helen Starrett, Adult Rehabilitation Centers Command director of special services, was interviewed recently by local celebrity and long-time Salvation Army supporter Stephanie Edwards. The taped interview was broadcast that evening on radio station KKLA (99.5 FM). Starrett announced the opening of the first women’s Adult Rehabilitation Center in the LA basin area, in the city of Arcadia.

PENNIES FOR HEAVEN
Christine and Emmili Penn “top off” the San Bernardino, Calif., Corps Sunday school penny drive for World Services. “The Sunday school raised $314 (31,408 pennies) during a four-month period,” report Corps Officers Majors Russ and Jacqué Fritz.

JOINING RANKS
Sumner Dodge reports that the Las Vegas, Nev., corps has enrolled eight new junior soldiers: Jonathan McDevitt, Sa’Dawn and Carlton Hogan, Zeneta, Shannia, and Shanice Clemons, and Tyler and Julian Chalsson.
